First Murphy House Welcome Center --

Now open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and some Saturdays

The First Murphy House, built in 1902 by 17 year old Michael J. Murphy, was the first of many cottages and notable structures designed and built by Murphy. He had a significant influence on the character anf architecture of the village of Carmel-by-the-Sea during his career. In 1990, when the little cottage was in danger of being demolished, the First Murphy House Committee was formed under the auspices of the Carmel Heritage Society. The house was moved to its present location and completely renovated. Now, the First Murphy House headquarters the Carmel Heritage Society and serves as a museum of Carmel's history--past and present.
