| The
Carmel Heritage Society's First Murphy House (Lincoln &
6th) reflects the legacy of our delightful community. And
with all the charm of days-gone-by, the village of Carmel-by-the-Sea
commands a deep respect and devotion. Residents of Carmel
take special care to preserve the heritage that is theirs.
The First Murphy House, constructed in 1902 by 17 year old
Michael J. Murphy, was the first of many cottages and notable
structures designed and built by Murphy. He had a significant
influence on the character and architecture of the village
of Carmel during his career. In 1990, when the little cottage
was in danger of being demolished, the First Murphy House
Committee was formed under the auspices of the Carmel Heritage
Society. The House was moved to its present site and completely
restored.
