The First Murphy House, constructed in 1902 by 17 year old Michael J. Murphy, was the first of many cottages and notable structures designed and built by Murphy. He had a significant influence on the character and architecture of the Village of Carmel during his career. In 1990, when the little cottage was in danger of being demolished, the First Murphy House Committee was formed under the auspices of the Carmel Heritage Society. The house was moved to its present site at the corner of Sixth and Lincoln Avenues and has been completely restored.
Carmel Heritage Society Board of Directors authorized the establishment of an Arts and Crafts Reference Library to provide information on the Arts and Crafts Movement for local designers, architects, contractors, planners and homeowners of our area. A grant of $2000 from the McMahan Foundation, and a gift of 20 Arts and Crafts books and periodicals from Docent Kathy Henney provided the impetus for our library. We have also received books from Barbara Bolgard, Buzz Schulte and Bill Strid.
